Behind the Scenes: Life Editor Academy June 2016 Retreat

Last weekend I had the pleasure of hosting a retreat for my Life Editor Academy mastermind group.

I don’t often get to see my clients in person (video calls don’t count) so it’s an incredible experience when I get a chance to hang out with them in the same room. Or pool. Or theme park.

Life Editor Academy is a 12-month group mastermind program for ambitious women who are ready to go after their goals, make tough choices about what they do and do not want in their lives, get real and raw, and push through every obstacle in their way.

These goal-oriented ladies cheer each other on no matter what obstacles they face over the course of the year.

We spent the retreat going over our successes, challenges, and next steps for 2016. Many of the ladies’ goals changed completely from what they thought they wanted in January!

We dove deep into the Life Editing Process, plus analyzed our fears and imposter syndrome. And of course, the best part was all the yummy food!

Check out this video for a behind-the-scenes look at the retreat.

Every weekday morning means 5 days of work pressure, personal obligations, and loads of stress.

  • Sit in traffic for an hour.
  • Get yelled at by your boss.
  • Answer angry customer emails.
  • Realize you’ve gained another 5 pounds.
  • Have your kid throw up on you.

Ugh! It makes you want to crawl under the covers and hide from the world.

But what if this morning could be different? What if you could start the day with a positive frame of mind and a bounce in your step?

What if you could wake up feeling like Beyonce or Britney or Lady Gaga?

You can! It’s time to shake up your wake up with your very own morning dance party.

Even if you start your day in a bad mood, you can easily turn it around by listening to music that makes you want get up, dance, and celebrate life. Just turn up the volume and concentrate on the happy, optimistic soundtrack.

Forget about dragging yourself through your morning routine. It’s time to really rise and shine!

How to Make Your Morning Dance Party Playlist

  1. Choose 5-10 songs that have a medium to fast pace with positive, uplifting lyrics. No down-beat tunes about how bad life is.
  2. Set your music player or phone to start your playlist as soon as your alarm goes off.
  3. As you wake up, stretch and take a few deep breaths as you listen to the music. Get out of bed at your own pace and keep the music going as you shower, get dressed, and eat breakfast.
  4. Feel free to dance with your partner, kids, dog, or by yourself. Get your blood flowing and concentrate on how awesome today is going to be!
  5. Listen to your music during your commute or when you do mindless admin tasks to keep the positivity going all day.

Soon you’ll be looking forward to your morning dance party more than your first cup of coffee. OK, it’ll be close.

10 One-Minute Easy Edits for Busy Women

0
0

If you’re anything like me, then most days you’re running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

Us busy Life Editors barely have time to breathe let alone work through the Life Editing Process and make positive changes.

Whoa there! You’re not a frazzled foul, and your head is still firmly attached to your neck.

The busy-ness of modern life isn’t going anywhere, but that doesn’t mean we should completely neglect our health and well-being.

I’ve compiled my easiest edits for you so you can make progress without losing your mind (head?), and I’ve even organized them by the steps of the Life Editing Process so you can scan it quickly like the busy woman you are.

Step 1: Create a Foundation

  1. Pause and list 5 things you’re grateful for. Don’t discount this edit because it feels silly! By focusing on what’s going right in your life (big or small!), you’ll motivate yourself to keep moving forward.
  2. Change the background on your phone or desktop to a photo of your loved ones. It’s easy to burn out if you forget why you’re doing all this work. A picture of your smiling kids could stop you from punching your boss on those frustrating days.

Step 2: Delete Bad Influences

  1. Pull out your calendar and delete one obligation or appointment. You’re busy enough, so get used to saying no more often. Choose one non-essential event to delete and feel the weight lift off your shoulders.
  2. Go to your pantry and throw out any chips, cookies, or junk food you see. You’ll have more stamina to do what you gotta do if you’re not crashing down after a sugar high.

Step 3: Add Good Habits and Routines

  1. Stand up and stretch! Get the blood flowing back to your brain so you can think clearly and be of service to your employees, customers, and loved ones.
  2. Floss your teeth. You’ll feel like a new you when you remove the leftover lunch salad bits from your teeth. And that minty feeling will perk you right up.

Step 4: Rearrange Everything Into a Perfect Flow

  1. Set a bedtime reminder alarm on your phone. Skimping on sleep won’t help you get more done during the day—it’ll just make all your tasks take twice as long. Set an alarm to remind you to get to bed early if you want to be your best self tomorrow.
  2. Write your top 3 priorities for tomorrow on a sticky note. Don’t waste precious time in the morning figuring out what you need to work on. Take a minute to set your priorities so you can hit the ground running in the AM.

Step 5: Make White Space for Personal Self-Care

  1. Do a one-minute meditation. Try my new favorite app Insight Timer for short meditations to center yourself and clear your mind. Best all, it’s free!
  2. Listen to the chorus of your favorite power song. Nothing gets me moving more than belting out the lyrics to some jams by Madonna or Britney Spears. Close your eyes and pretend you’re dancing on stage for a sold-out concert.

How do you edit your life when you’re busier than ever? Share your tips with me on Facebook.

FYFW: 5 Ways to Choose Self-Care Over Self-Comfort

0
0

Happy Halloween, Life Editor!

Before you settle onto the couch to watch scary movies and eat sugary snacks (admit it, you bought that candy for yourself, not the trick-or-treaters), let’s talk about self-care.

Because here’s the trick—most people choose self-comfort over self-care, and they’re not the same thing.

One will fill you up with positive energy, while the other will make you crash and burn faster than a sugar high.

Self-comfort is when you overindulge in things that numb you out, deplete your energy, or make you feel bad about yourself.

But the weird thing is that you think you’re being kind to yourself when you do those things like watch TV for hours or eat a whole chocolate cake.

Self-care and self-comfort are not the same thing.

Self-care gives you energy and fills your cup. You feel more hopeful and alive after self-care. Self-comfort numbs you out and drains your energy until you’re a zombie looking for your next hit.

So what will it be? A trick or a treat?

This is Face Your Fear Week, and in today’s video I’m sharing 5 ways to choose self-care over self-comfort.

Burned Out? 5 Ways to Enjoy White Space at Work

0
0

If you’re like most women, then your life is seriously lacking in white space.

I’m not talking about white walls, neutral colors, or minimalistic decor. White space has nothing to do with design, but everything to do with how you respect your energy levels.

In life editing, we use an old publishing term called “white space” to describe self-care. Book editors (like I used to be!) use white space to refer to spots on a printed page with no text or pictures. It gives a reader’s eyes a place to rest.

But where are you resting in your life?

Don’t wait until the weekends to take care of yourself! Making time for self-care while you’re on the job is important so you won’t collapse from exhaustion by the time the weekend rolls around.

In today’s video, you’ll learn 5 easy ways to enjoy white space at work.

The video transcript is below for your convenience.

PS, Want to recharge with your fellow workaholics? Come to Life Editor Weekend!

Next Steps

Video Transcript

Are you the type of person who comes home after a long week at work so exhausted that all you can do is collapse on the couch to watch TV all weekend?

I get it! I’ve been there too. But if you spend all Saturday and Sunday napping and being a blob, then you need to boost your self-care—fast.

In life editing, we call self-care “white space,” the publishing term that means where there’s no text or pictures on a printed page. White space gives a reader’s eyes a place to relax, but where are you relaxing in your life?

Don’t wait until the weekends to take care of yourself!

Today, you’ll learn 5 ways to enjoy white space at work. Let’s go!

Hey there! I’m Sage Grayson, a former book editor turned life coach. I help ambitious career women edit their habits, routines, and mindsets to balance their happiness at work and home. I’m a Life Editor and so are you!

When you work nonstop during the week at your job or on your business, you’re setting yourself up for a major burnout. All your daily tasks and interactions deplete your precious energy, and it’s vital for you to replenish yourself every day.

Building white space breaks into your work day ensures that you won’t waste your weekends being lazy, and you’ll have added energy to power through your busy days.

Here are 5 simple ways to enjoy white space at work.

1. Go for a walk.

One of the publishing houses I used to work for had a walking club that met before lunch every day.

Walking during your work day gets your blood flowing so you think more clearly, it encourages healthy habits so you won’t binge at lunch, and it promotes team bonding if you walk with a friend.

If you can’t leave the building, try walking around your floor a few times. Or map out a 1-mile loop that goes away from your building and then back again.

When I worked in Chicago, I got to walk down Michigan Avenue and window shop during my work day.

2. Eat lunch away from your desk.

There’s nothing more depressing than seeing an overworked employee eating a soggy sandwich over her keyboard.

Eating lunch at your desk is gross, and it tells your manager that you don’t value yourself enough to take a proper lunch break.

Don’t be a slave to the job! Take your lunch to the break room, a bench outside, or even you car where you can listen to uplifting music or a podcast while you eat.

3. Take a nap.

This one might be easier for people who work at home, but I know plenty of corporate employees who still find time for naps on the job.

Now, I’m not talking about disappearing for 2 hours over lunch, but a 20-minute nap is enough to give you a breather.

Go to an empty conference room, your car, or close the door to your office if you have one. Set an alarm on your phone for 20 minutes and close your eyes. You could even listen to some white noise for added relaxation.

4. Write a gratitude list.

I once had a job that was so miserable that I was getting violently sick on the drive to work every morning. I know that’s gross, but it’s too.

The only way I could get through the day was by focusing on the positive things in my life, even though it didn’t feel like much.

I started writing gratitude lists in my planner when I was feeling especially stressed out. I was thankful for having a paycheck, for not having to share an office, and for having my weekends off.

These simple gratitude lists gave me the confidence and courage to get out of that horrible place as soon as I was able.

5. Boost your environment.

Your workspace is a reflection of you, so surround yourself with little things that give you a jolt of happiness when you see them.

You could bring in a framed photo of your family, souvenirs from your last vacation, or colorful office supplies to motivate you.

You sit in your work environment for 8 hours a day, so why not add some pizzazz to those cubicle walls?

That’s it! This week choose one white space activity to try at work.

Remember: a relaxed, calm employee is a productive employee.

Book Review: Women, Food, and God

February is the month of love: obviously, for celebrating your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, but also for self-love.

What? Did you forget about taking care of yourself this month?

Regardless if you have a special someone in your life buying you chocolates and roses, YOU deserve to show love to yourself.

Too often we focus outward to what other people are doing or the distractions that are flung our way.

When we become numb to our own needs, we end up treating ourselves in ways that don’t support our goals.

We might never take work breaks so we get stressed out, or we stay up late watching TV instead of getting enough sleep, or most commonly, we mentally distance ourselves from our bodies and medicate ourselves with food.

No shame! We’ve all been there, and I’ve definitely drowned my sorrows in a bowl of vegan Cherry Garcia ice cream on more than one occasion.

Do we overeat to tame our hunger, or is all that food putting up a wall between us and the uncomfortable and scary feelings we don’t want to deal with?

Let’s get real and raw with one of my all-time favorite self-love books: the incredible Women, Food, and God by Geneen Roth.

I’ve recommended this book so many times I’ve lost count, and my Life Editor Academy ladies often say it’s their favorite book we read all year.

Get ready to challenge the way you view food!

Women, Food, and God is part memoir, part self-help book for women who want to figure out what they’re really hungry for. Perhaps what you’re truly craving is companionship, freedom, relaxation, or love . . . not another bag of Oreos.

Geneen Roth’s writing hits me right in the gut, and I can’t help but empathize with the women at her retreats who use every excuse in the world rather than confront their own demons.

When it comes to food, we’re our own worst enemies!

Favorite Quick Tips

  • Sometimes the dysfunctional way we eat has been ingrained in us since childhood. We might have been given a cookie if we fell down or were rewarded with pizza for good grades.
  • Sometimes we don’t even like the foods we’re eating, but the numbness of binging stops us from feeling lonely, sad, or hopeless. It’s easier to push down those feelings than to experience our emotions fully and honestly.
  • Eating slowly and mindfully is firmly tied to weight loss.

As your coach, I want you to love yourself enough to have a healthy and balanced relationship with food.

You’ll find that the strength and solutions you’ve been looking for have always been inside you, and not on your plate.

Next Steps

  • Get your copy of Women, Food, and God.
  • Examine your relationship with food. Are you eating because of hunger or something else?
  • Clean out your pantry and fridge so you have more of the healthy food that makes you feel good and less of the junk that numbs you out.
  • Share your thoughts with me on Facebook.

Life Editor’s Picks: Easy Home Gym

0
0

Productivity is my specialty, and I feel an incredible high when I help my clients get more important things done in less time.

Nearly everyone I work with wants to improve their health, which makes sense because you can’t focus on any other goals if you’re sick and tired.

But rearranging your schedule (Step 4 of my Life Editing Process) can get a little tricky when you try to balance all your priorities within your days and weeks.

So if you never seem to manage to drive yourself to the fancy gym that’s 30 minutes away, maybe you should keep it simple and exercise in your living room.

You’ll save the travel time, not have to wait for people to get off the equipment you want to use, and be able to shower in the comfort of your own home.

And no wiping strangers’ sweat off the treadmill. Ew!

Do yourself a favor and put your health first by setting up a convenient workout space at home.

Here are my picks for an easy home gym.

1. Weighted Gloves. Slip on these babies when you need to punch away your anxiety!

2. Richard Simmons: Sweatin’ to the Oldies Vol. 2. Laugh all you want, but this is the video that made me love working out. As a fat kid in the early 90s, Richard’s loving enthusiasm encouraged me to move my body for ME, not because of society’s expectations.

3. Jump Rope. An inexpensive way to get your heart rate up without a pricy elliptical machine or bike that will just take up space.

4. New Balance Women’s 711v2 Training Shoe. These are my favorite vegan cross-trainers that are perfect for a variety of activities. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you should exercise in your socks.

5. Neoprene Dumbbells. I have these same dumbbells in my office so I can squeeze in a few reps in between my client calls.

6. Vinyl Kettlebell Set. Get a wider range of motion and shake up your usual strength routine with these adorable kettlebells.

7. Resistance Loop Bands. Gradually increase the resistance as you get stronger.

8. Gaiam Yoga Mat. A beautiful design to admire while you’re in Downward Facing Dog.

9. Water Bottle. You might look like a sweaty disheveled mess, but at least your bottle can look chic and cool.

10. Bluetooth Color Changing Dual Alarm Clock FM Radio. Turn your living room into a disco gym with this colorful speaker.

How to Ditch Your Bad Habits Once and For All! A Step-By-Step Guide

0

We all have bad habits that don’t reflect us living our best edited lives.

For me, I spend WAY too much money on new planners and notebooks when I have dozens of unused ones sitting in my office. I even bought 4 new ones on Black Friday. Yowzers!

My clients struggle with their bad habits too. One of my clients never sorts through her mail so it just piles up on her kitchen counter for weeks and months. Another client ignores her goals and binge-watches streaming shows for hours.

Sound familiar?

These bad habits gotta hit the road, but how do we do that, especially if we’ve been battling them for years?

In today’s video, you’ll learn how to ditch your bad habits once and for all.
